she said that people who looked on the bright side of things would be beautiful even if they were not.

"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."

hi lovelies. i owe you an apology. i've really let this place go. it's been ages since the last redesign, and over a year since my last post. so much has changed- i don't really know where to begin. i guess i will start with what's happening now, and i may work my way backwards to cover how it came to be this way.

for now, and since mid-june, i find myself living in elizabethtown, kentucky. don't worry- there is a plan. i am working as a process engineer for Standard Register. as part of a three-year rotational program, i will move annually. i'd tell you where i'm going next, but that's sensitive information, and i'd have to kill you. also, i don't know yet.

work is good. i am supervising the prepress department, where we make photopolymer plates, negatives, and screens for every job that is printed in the building.  i am learning a lot about the processes, but also a lot about the working world in general. office politics are
unavoidable; even if you make a point to refrain, you will be involved somehow.  communication is key, and it's something we don't do very well here. i am a smart cookie.

i am enjoying kentucky and the area where i live, but it's very different from home. everything moves a little slower down here. i've met some truly amazing and beautiful people, and i've met some who shocked me with their blunt hatred and racism. i have made a handful of friends outside of work, and i think they are keepers. y'all know i'm not very good at keeping in touch, but it's something i want to work on, and i want to work on it with you and with them.

i've been on some great adventures since i moved down. long drives yield old cemeteries +  crumbly buildings to explore. the ohio river has taken my breath away more than once. the music scene in louisville + nashville has kept me satisfied; i have seen dave brubeck, spoon, modest mouse, and eisley so far. there is a sweet, venerable culture in louisville that is more progressive and open than i initially expected. nashville is all country, all the time. this is reflected in the sheer number of karaoke bars at hand.

personal news alert: you may know already. you may not know. if you don't know already you might care, but you probably don't. i broke up with kevin over the summer. we remain friends, to some degree, and he's doing really well for himself working as a web designer in boston. makes me proud. :smiles:

to backtrack just a little bit, i finally graduated from RIT this past spring. bill clinton spoke at convocation. it was hot and sunny and the school tried to fry us once and for all by seating us in an uncovered parking lot. we prevailed. i miss school.

i will try to get back into this and share my new stories with greater frequency. i miss you, too.

things that are good (in no specific order):

- mountains of books from work. +magazines. +cosmetics. +posters. +cds. +a chinese calligraphy set! +++

- time inc's cafeteria. it is located on the second floor of the time life building, and golly, it is good. kevin and i filled ourselves up on breakfast there last week, and it was delciously affordable and tasty.

- central park. seriously. some friends and i were walking through, and we learned that there is an association for dancers on roller skates. they skate every weekend with loud music and fancy costumes. how old do you think she is?

we also saw the castle and the view from the castle.

- the mexican place in downtown bergenfield. oh my gosh. it is within walking distance of my new jersey house. it is exceptional. becca, kevin, and brian can all attest to this.

- my tuesday - friday morning bus driver. he has become a good friend. my favourite moment was when he told three heavyset middleaged women 'you three look like charlie's angels' as they got on the bus. he's such a pimp.

there's a boy who works upstairs for inStyle magazine. he attends RIT. we have had one class together. i was his team leader in said class, and somehow he still thinks i am great. this boy is an odd one, but he keeps me entertained.

last week, he im'ed me with a strange, excited tone. the women of inStyle were in rare form. he told me they'd be gearing up for some special event since the day before. the 'beauty supply closets' of inStyle were opening, and they were having a benefit sale. he invited me upstairs, met me in the lobby and escorted me to a small, overcrowded conference room. every fragrance, shampoo, lip gloss and bronzing lotion was $1. women lined the hallways holding three and four large shopping bags. it was easily 95ยบ in the sale room, and people were elbowing each other to grab and hoard things. i got in after the sale had been running for a few hours, so it was mostly picked over, but i couldn't leave empty handed.

i bought a fancy au natural grapefruit conditioner (love) and a few lipsticks and glosses. i spent four dollars. i saw a woman spend $400.

mmmmmm chocolate chip muffin breakfast.

all because the woman i live with won't let me eat breakfast at home anymore. i guess this is a blessing in disguise. a disguise that looks like karen and two kids home early from camp.
